MARCH 9, 2021

The historical crossroads town of Gordonsville anchors the mostly rural Orange County Precinct 102.

Message from Our Co-chairs
Joe and Elaine Freeland

The Orange County Democratic Committee will vote on a proposed revision of the committee’s Bylaws during our March 13 meeting. As we worked on the revision, the most thought-provoking task was to clearly define qualifications for membership.

The solution: Any person is eligible for membership if they are a registered voter in the county; are a self-identifying Democrat; support the Committee and its efforts to elect Democrats; and believe in the principles of the Democratic Party.

Our principles are formulated in the Charter of the Democratic Party: At the heart of our party lies a fundamental conviction, that Americans must not only be free but live in a fair society. It is the responsibility of government to help us achieve this fair society.  Though aspirational, the principles are defined as our shared Democratic values such as:
  • The party must listen to those it leads.
  • A party which asks for the people's trust must prove that it trusts the people.
  • The party must embody the best of the Nation's heritage and traditions.
  • Individual freedom lies in the framework of a just society,
  • Political freedom is the framework of meaningful participation by all citizens.
Our principles are refined as policy priorities expressed in the Party Platform and, to some degree, manifested in legislation such as the federal American Rescue Plan and bills passed in the 2021 Virginia General Assembly that will protect families, keep Virginians healthy, build a stronger economy, support education, bolster our democracy, and make Virginia more inclusive. We Democrats, the party of inclusion and outreach, pledge to work together to move this country forward and strive to reach higher ground.

Congratulations to Trenton Matthews

The OCDC is happy to share the news that Trenton Matthews, President of the Youth Club, has been awarded the Virginia Tech Presidential Scholarship. No more than 85 Virginia residents per year receive this renewable, four-year scholarship. It recognizes and rewards academically talented students who have shown persistence, leadership potential and a commitment to academic excellence. Trenton gives much credit to his experience collaborating with fellow students to form the first-ever Young Democrats Club at Orange County High School and volunteering with OCDC on 2020 Democratic campaigns.

Trenton will be studying Environmental Conservation and Society. VT’s website offers this description of the major: "It is a good choice for those who like the environment and working with people. You'll get to help protect the environment while educating others and getting them excited about nature as well.”  Doesn’t this sound like the Trenton we all know?

Your OCDC friends celebrate with you, Trenton!  We shall eagerly follow your educational and professional career.  Thank you for being a huge contributor to the goals of the OCDC and the Democratic Party.

Precinct in the Spotlight

Polls open at daybreak, November 3, 2020

102-Gordonsville Fire House
Sandra Smith, originally from California, and Barbara "Willow" Drinkwater from upstate NY have served as co-captains of their southeastern Precinct 102 in Gordonsville since 2011. Sandra played hooky in Torrance, CA with fellow 10th grade classmates to hear John Kennedy speak, and shook the hand of a fellow classmate who shook the hand of Kennedy!
Willow at age 31 represented Western NY at the 1972 Democratic Convention as a McGovern delegate and attended Jimmy Carter's Inaugural Ball.  Sandra and Willow both phonebanked for Obama at the Miller Law Office and continue serving from early dawn at Precinct 102 at the Gordonsville Fire House on election days.
