15 Days until Joe Biden is sworn in as President and Kamala Harris is sworn in as Vice President!  We gleefully welcome 2021 with hope and awareness that we have a lot of hard work ahead.

As President-elect Biden introduces nominees to fill cabinet posts and agency leadership positions, we watch and listen to his pride in country and pride in the highly qualified individuals with whom he and Vice President-elect Harris will work to make America better.  In turn, the nominees express gratitude for the opportunities. Additionally, they express loyalty - loyalty to Americans, our Constitution, and a way of life that benefits all.  Therein lies hope. 

As you read further in the newsletter, you will see The Youth has become a chartered Virginia Young Democrats club.  Therein lies hope for these Young Democrats, not yet old enough to vote, are fully embracing democracy and their power to affect change.

Our sincere thanks go to Jim Donovan. He has resigned as Vice-Chair following many years of service to the Orange County Democratic Committee.  We also express our thanks to Willow Drinkwater who is stepping down as Secretary. Happily, Jim and Willow will remain active OCDems. Ellen Wessel and Lisa Ward have kindly agreed to fill the positions of Vice Chair and Secretary, respectively, subject to approval of the membership.

OCDC January Meeting-All are Welcome

Virginia Senator Jennifer McClellan, Democratic candidate for Governor, will be our guest speaker at the next Orange County Democratic Committee meeting, Saturday, January 9 at 10:00 am via Zoom.  

Additional items on the agenda include budget approval and the election of secretary and vice-chair.

The Youth Club

Recently, we were able to work with some of our peers in Virginia to get officially chartered under the Virginia Young Democrats (VAYD). We started this process back in the summer by writing our by-laws and recruiting members. The process was very easy since we work so well together! With the help of a few other VAYD members, we got all the paperwork for chartering and as of December 20th, we are official members of the Young Democrats.

In order to be officially chartered, we needed 10 members which permit us to participate in VAYD events like conventions and committees. The greater our membership means that we qualify for more votes in VAYD events. We were finalized at around 16 members and 3 advisors! Chartering is a big step in the future of the Orange County Young Democrats because we can now work alongside other schools throughout Virginia.

Virginia Elections 2021

No rest for the weary: The 2021 Virginia statewide and House of Delegates’ races challenge us to hold the trifecta together (Governor and both houses of the General Assembly) so we can continue the fight for a better, fairer and brighter future for every Virginian. 

As of this writing, 5 people are seeking the Democratic nomination for governor, 8 Democrats are vying for lieutenant governor and 3 plan to compete for Attorney General. The Orange County Dems will introduce as many statewide candidates as possible to the committee before the June 8 primary. 

The House of Delegates will likely hold primaries in August due to the impact of redistricting. Currently,
Annette Hyde is the only declared Democrat for the 30th District.

Additionally, options are being considered as to how we will gather signatures on the Petitions of Qualified Voters for the candidates in the time of COVID-19.
